Each month PASA will feature a new artist from its Catalog of On-Site Artist Services (COSAS), allowing viewers a more in-depth look at each artist in the catalogue and showcasing their unique discipline and style.

May’s COSAS Artist of the month is Clare Watters! Clare specializes in fiber arts and brings a unique aspect to her trade, blending fine art and textile design with high volume retail aesthetics. Through her passion for antiques and handmade materials, she makes an intimate craft accessible to the general public.

Clare works with a range of media and applications, including antique embroidery, silk ,vintage furniture and abandoned household items to create custom upholstery, textiles, and decorative accents.  A large portion of her work as an artist is focused on encouraging artistic exploration within the community and retail environment; by incorporating diverse cultural aesthetics into her salvaged modern pieces she inspires shoppers, educators, students and artists to explore their own creative potential. Her most recent works incorporate vintage ethnic designs along with her customary antique salvaged furniture and objects, resulting in modern and functional works of art that range from upholstered furniture to lampshades, pillows, bedcovers, wall hangings and curtains.

Clare graduated with a BFA degree from the Kansas City Art Institute, and is currently the retail Gallery Manager at the Southwest School of Art and Craft. Through coordination with artists and vendors, she uses her artistic background to provide unique merchandise exhibits, and creates opportunities for craftspeople to exhibit and sell their work. Concurrently, Clare is the owner of Material Recovery, a retail/wholesale business specializing in fine art upholstery and material reconstruction, and is where  Clare produces the majority of her professional work.
Through her combined work as a retail specialist and fiber artist, Clare has unified a time honored craft, fine art, and diverse cultural aesthetics into an accessible and unique retail environment.

Clare’s work at Material Recovery can be found online at MaterialRecovery.etsy.com and will also be exhibited at the upcoming Fall 2010 Marburger Farm Antique Show.
