Each month PASA will feature an artist from the Catalog of On-Site Artist Services (COSAS), allowing viewers a more in-depth look at their work and showcasing their unique discipline and style .
Our featured artist for the month of April is Alex Rubio. Alex specializes in painting and large scale murals, ceramics and mosaic art. His signature aesthetic includes dynamic lines, vivid colors, and graphic imagery that reflect his strong ties to the community and distinguish him as a Chicano artist.
Beginning his career as a painter working in acrylic paints and mixed media, he gradually expanded his trade to include large scale murals and ceramic mosaics, and began working throughout San Antonio in local cathedrals, neighborhoods, and well -known art organizations. His work is consistently expressive, embracing strong saturated colors that enhance his equally bold content and imagery. Alex’s murals and mosaics express his connection with his with his Latin American culture and his community.
In addition to being a respected visual artist, Alex is also a prominent educational figure in the city, leading after-school and community outreach programs with organizations such as Blue Star Contemporary Art Center, UTSA, San Anto Cultural Arts and the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. Through the process of art making, he brings art education and opportunities to a variety of students, ranging from teen youth to at-risk juveniles, enlightening students about the importance of tradition, culture, history, and community.
Alex currently is the Mosaic art Studio Manager at Blue Star Contemporary Art Center. He has exhibited at the McNay Art Museum, ArtPace, and the San Antonio Museum of Art, and currently has work on display at the PASA studio and permanent mosaic murals installed at the Casiano Homes on Salsemore Street.
